The Hawaiian Long-tail Red Snapper, also known as Onaga, has light pink flesh and is semi-firm, lean, flaky, and moist. It also goes by the names Scarlet and Ruby snapper, but is not the same species as Pink snapper, a.k.a. opakapaka. The Long-tail Red snapper is caught at depths of 500-900 feet with vertical hook-and-line gear. Monterey Bay Aquarium rates the Long-tail Red Snapper in Hawaii as a “Good Alternative”.
